Finding Ways to Help Pay for College

Investing in your college education is a big commitment, but there are many ways to help make it more affordable.

The best first step is checking your eligibility for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Make sure to check the FAFSA deadlines and apply for aid as soon as possible to maximize your aid!

If you aren’t eligible or you’ve already completed your FAFSA, there are still many other options to help you pay for college!

GRANTS

Unlike loans, grants are a form of financial aid that, generally, doesn’t have to be repaid. This can make them great options for controlling how much debt you accumulate while financing your education.

They can come from a variety of sources, such as the federal government, your state government, your college, or other organizations. With so many options available, it is important to do your research to find the grants that align with your academic and financial goals.

If you have any questions or need more information about grants, be sure to contact your school’s Financial Aid Office as they can help you explore grant options!

SCHOLARSHIPS

Scholarships are a great way to reduce the cost of your education. Many organizations offer scholarships to help students pay for college based on a variety of factors such as financial need, academic merit, talent, or a specific area of study. Because they do not need to be repaid, scholarships can be fantastic sources of free money and can make a big difference in your educational expenses.

It’s important to take time to research the best scholarship options for your particular situation. Luckily, there are extensive databases available through The College Board and Career One Stop to help you find the best national and local scholarships for you. Be sure to check the application requirements and deadlines as you apply!

You can also contact your school’s Financial Aid Office for questions or help finding scholarships. They may be able to provide guidance on scholarships you're eligible for and provide advice on the application process.

LOANS

Taking out student loans is another option to finance your education. Because a loan is money you borrow and must pay back with interest, it’s important to do your research and learn about the basics of the loan process. Make sure you understand who is making the loan and the terms and conditions before taking on this financial responsibility.

If you need help understanding your loan options, you can also contact your school’s Financial Aid Office for more info!

WORK-STUDY

The Federal Work-Study Program offers part-time jobs for students, either on or off campus, so you can earn money while still having time to focus on your education. This is also a great opportunity to gain work experience – often aligned with your field of study – while still in school.

It’s important to understand how your work-study income fits into your financial aid package. Be sure to check out your institution's website to find work-study opportunities at your school, and contact your school’s Financial Aid Office for more info on available work opportunities!
